Sea Woven

Sustainable fiber art + goods

Slow art, made with salvaged materials.

Inspired by her deep love for the ocean and driven by the urgent environmental challenges we face, fibre artist Kimberly Leckey—known as Sea Woven—transforms salvaged materials into powerful statements of plastic rebellion. Residing in Ucluelet, BC, where discarded fishing nets and rope accumulate in a notorious pile dubbed 'rope mountain,' she confronts the profound waste of the fishing industry with creativity and purpose.

Inspired by the textures of one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems, the coral reef, this piece presents the stark reality that, one day, the only colours that could remain will be those of marine debris. Using recycled cotton rope and other white fibres, I depict the transformation of dying coral affected by pollution and human impact. Seascape #1 highlights the delicate balance of marine life and the pervasive presence of plastic, urging reflection on our environmental impact.

In my work, I explore the intricate relationship between nature, waste, and transformation. As an artist at Sea Woven, I create upcycled macramé pieces that reflect the dark, relentless energy of the ocean—a force that embodies both life and death. Using a foundation of reclaimed wood, I knot together polypropylene turquoise rope salvaged from the landfill, black cotton rope, and the bone of a seal. Each material carries its own story, merging the remnants of human impact with the beauty of the natural world.

The ocean, in its raw power, serves as my muse, reminding us of the cycles that govern existence. My art seeks to capture this duality: the beauty and brutality of nature, the tension between creation and destruction. Through this process, I aim to provoke reflection on our relationship with the environment, urging viewers to consider the potential for renewal in what we often discard. In every knot and twist, I invite you to witness the resilience of life amidst the shadows—a celebration of transformation and the interconnectedness of all beings.

I found the video so much easier to follow than other written patterns I have purchased.
